I've used Shell Rotella Synth 5W40 in our NG 900S non turbo with 10,000 Km drain intervals, and the oil was always a darkish brown right towards the end of the cycle.
In the 2003 9-5 Linear, I use Amsoil Euro 5W40 and the oil is a nice light brown colour for the first 3,000 Km, mixed driving, and turns a slightly dark brown towards the 5,000 Km when it gets changed. I don't think I have ever seen it turn black.
