I am thinking about picking up a 9-5 sedan. The seller is discounting it because it "will need some engine work". He says that there is an engine knock especially under hard excelleration and that if you push it real hard it feels like it loses a little power. He says once you're at hwy speeds you don't hear anything. His "opinion" is that it is a bad valve guide. He says the CEL is not on and it is not setting any trouble codes. He also says he's never had a Saab before and doesn't know anything about them.
Should I assume that this engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced? Is there anything I could do to diagnose or eliminate specific causes for the knock. If he is right and it's a bad valve guide, could I fix that without pulling the engine?
Is this an engine sludge symptom? Any way to remediate that without a rebuild or if it knocks is it too late?
I was thinking about buying it as a parts car (I have a 99 wagon with a bad tranny) but now am wondering if it might be the driver and the wagon be the parts car. However, if the engine with the knock can be repaired or maybe even not need a repair - that would be nice too. Would a seafoam treatment help or might it make things worse?
I'd appreciate your input......
