In layman's terms - knock - the damn engine feels like it is going to blow and is louder than an unmuffled diesel; makes one worried that the engine will fall out of the car, etc.
ping - you hit the accelerator, and you can hear a bit of noise
So does the guy who has never had a SAAB know what it is supposed to sound like? Is she smoking white, gray or black out the tailpipe?
My MY99 9-5 pings, when I use low octane gas, occasionally, and it disappears when I run on 94. Over 110,000 miles on it.
My MY05 9-5 Arc pings too, if if put the cheap gas in. 50,000 miles on it.
buy it for parts (ie, pretend it doesn't even have an engine), and then take it home, and wait for a pleasant surprise. Trust your ears, not his.
