Brake caliper question

'04 Aero SW

A couple of months ago I replaced my front pads and rotors. When installing the inside pads, the cheapy pad retaining clip stamped on the back (Akebonos) popped off. I installed them anyway and saved the clips. Subsequent rattle of the pads when going over bumps forced me to pull the pads recently and fasten the clips to the inner pads (tiny self tapping screws).

To pull the caliper I pushed the pistons back and removed the guide pins per usual. After reassembling everything and while driving for a few days the brakes were very soft and would need the pedal pumped to be firm. I bled them which helped for a while, but the softness is returning. One thing I noticed when bleeding the drivers side brake is that after bleeding and pumping the pedal to firm up, the caliper piston would retract into the bore leaving at least a 1/8" gap between the piston/pad and rotor.

So...does this seem normal? I've always observed when pulling pads that the piston/pad are still in contact with the rotor. The piston retracting is perplexing. I wonder if I created a leak in the piston when compressing it to remove the pads to reinstall the clips.
