It was difficult and I do not recommend. But if you remove the struts for change, that should work well.
Note, this applies only to Koni Sports replacement shocks, perhaps other Koni shocks. Does not apply to Saab shocks.
2004 Aero Wagon
Once the springs were compressed and moved up, the lower seat can be freed up with some peni oil and hammering and twisting. Then the split ring can be free'd to rotate and one end picked up and the ring can be moved out of it's groove then into the groove 20mm above. When there, the spring can be uncompressed a bit to create some light pressure on the ring and the ring can be pressed/seated into the groove with a slip wrench, a drift and small hammer, then the spring can be lowered onto the spring seat and the split ring will fit onto a lower receiving/retaining groove in the spring seat.
Again, I do not recommend that you attempt this with the strut installed in the vehicle. [The caliper and rotor were removed as part of this work and the p-brake pivots and supports were lubed. For reference, the caliber bolts were 18mm hex.]
The ride height has now been increased by 20mm. See other posts concerning springs, ride height and camber.
