Mobil 1 0W40 is one of very few oils that meet the 9-3SS requirements and is the oil that Saab requires for "warranty" (i.e., Saab paid scheduled maintenance) on the 9-3SS. It is also meets the 9-5 specs, as do a great many other oils.
Saab therefore specifically recommends 0W40 MObil 1 in part so that the dealers don't need to stock two different oils.
Since the High Mileage 10W40 also meets the 9-5's specs, and since it also has higher HTHS viscosity (that's in the bearings) and since the 9-5 runs at a higher oil temperature than the 9-3SS, I believe it's a little better oil to use than the 0W40. And it's not any more expensive nor is it harder (for me) to find. But I would never say that Mobil 1 0W40 should not be used in 9-5s.
