'99 SE V6, 125k miles. Recently the engine has been leaking oil when driving, manifesting itself by a burnt smell at traffic lights, because some drops fall on the exhaust. It doesn't leak from the pan when standing still. Checking up on it, I saw that both the valve cover gaskets are weeping oil all round, whereas they have been bone dry until recently and the gaskets have not been touched. The area around the CPS seems to leak a bit as well.
Considering this I would assume that I do have some pressure in the cranckcase. The PCV valve to the TB is ok. However, I am planning to make sure the system is clean, so I was thinking of taking the oil trap out and clean it, before I start looking further.
I cannot find a procedure in the WIS, however, not even a simple R&R. Am I missing something here? Is there anyone who has done this before and can give me some pointers?
I know from UK Vauxhall boards that these guys consider cleaning the trap as regular maintenance, but the engine is longitudinally mounted in that application, so the procedure is diffent (and much harder).
Some additional info: this car is not driven daily at this moment, more like in the weekends only. Over the last month the car has shown some abnormal behaviour 3 times at a cold start: idle would oscillate between 900 and 1500 rpm for a few seconds before settling. At at least one occasion a puff of black smoke came out of the exhaust. I knew this because at that occasion my wife was watching waiting to get in. I asked whether she was sure it wasn't blue smoke, she said it was definately black.
Any ideas/comments are greatly appreciated
