Ref: 2003 9-5 AERO Sedan 41,000 miles
In an earlier posting I reported that the Akenonos drastically reduced the AERO's braking power especially at highway speeds.
At 29,000 I installed the SAAB P/N 12759808 Akebono front pads (the pads were printed with the word Akebono on the back) and Akebono EUR763 rear pads with new Zimmerman rotors in front and new GM rotors in the rear. Pads were seated per the instructions. Soft pedal and poor braking performance was experienced so the brake fluid was changed and system bled. Same braking conditions continues so the bleeding was repeated.
I ordered Hawk HPS HB388F.756 Front from Tire Rack and sourced the HB227F.630 rear locally. The Tire Rack order had damaged pads (attributed to the carrier Tire Rack is fabulous). I needed to make a trip to Philadelphia so I installed the rear pads. The brake lines were not opened. The guide pins were smooth. Again seated per instructions. Magic! Even with just the rear pads replaced the braking improved significantly!
The front pads arrived and were installed yesterday. No brake lines were opened and the pads seated per the instructions. Let them cool a bit then off to the NJ Turnpike for the real life test. MY AERO's brakes were back! Excellent grab and no fading! What a huge huge difference!
The Akebono's did deliver very little brake dust on the wheels and the rotors were very smooth with no uneven wear or ridges. After 11,000 miles the inner and outer front pads measured 10mm each. The rears measured 10mm and 8mm respectively. I used a Steelman Manual Brake Gauge for the measurements. I assume the new Akebono pads were about 12mm so they wore very little and the rotors wore very little. No further comment...
So there was nothing wrong with the hydraulics or any brake components. It was the pads!
I will have dirty wheels again but every time I see the dirty wheels I will feel confident that the brakes are doing their job and will be there when I need them.
I hope my experience will help others.
