Among other things, FWD has the advantage of not oversteering when you lose traction in a turn like rear wheel drive, but RWD has the plus of positive weight transfer during acceleration. But weight placement has more impact do with traction than wheel drive location; most cars are front engine, so on average FWD outperforms RWD.
That being said I much prefer a well balanced RWD car in the snow. Because of the weight shift during acceleration it gets better traction when you need it, and it allows the steering end to the car to use all of it's available traction for steering. Plus oversteer is more fun. :-)
