No there is no way to do that without taking the manifolds off. But frankly, this is actually not hard at all, just a lot of nuts & bolts you have to remove, all within easy reach. As long as you don't drop them on the valves, taking the manifold off will take some 20 minutes.
No, the hard part is taking out the coolant pipe that goes to the radiator top hose. You have to get the oil dipstick tube and the turbo pipe out of the way, take the radiator hose off and pull it out to the front, where there is scarcely room to do so.
If you decide to go in: get a hose clamp tool. You'll curse yourself if you don't.
I am a bit worried about the diagnosis though. This 122C is coming from somewhere. The steady temp of the engine system is set around 87C. Something is overheating badly, and the gauge doesn't indicate so. I can't reconcile 122C coolant and a dash gauge that isn't in the red. The dash gauge reading low can indicate the stuck open thermostat. A stuck closed thermo is not that common.
And don't hate that car. It's ok ;-)
