Cleaning MAF sensor corrected code 1181

The other day we got check engine light code 1181 on our 2004 9-5 Aero (44,000 miles). This code is for "Long term fuel trim error. Air/fuel mixture too lean." I inspected all the hoses and vacuum lines under the hood and found nothing amiss. So, I decided to get some Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner at the local Autozone. Removed the two hoses attached to the MAF sensor, disconnected the electrical connector, removed the MAF sensor from the car and proceeded to spray the cleaner onto its wires. Let the thing dry, reinstalled it onto the car. Then cleared the check engine code and went out for a drive. The car ran noticeably better with a bit stronger acceleration and the check engine light did not reappear.
The instructions on the can of MAF cleaner recommended to use this stuff at every air filter change. Have any of our fellow 9-5 owners been regularly using this stuff, and if so, what has their experience been in terms of a noticable performance improvement?
