Took the turbo off and the bearings were shot, the shaft was flopping around! So I did a lot of research and I purchased a rebuilt Garrett GT17 off ebay for $500.00. It's warranted for a year. I wanted to rebuild the original but I heard the balancing was critical and there was contact with the impellers and the housing so I didn't want to risk it.
I wouldn't say this is an easy job, I found the banjo bolts were real hard to deal with. Ultimately I got it installed and it seems to be running great! Sound nice, have a little whistling souind like my old 9000CSE had, never heard this on a 9-5. Good boost!
One more question...has anyone come across a turbo failing due to the oil or water feed tubes being clogged, etc.? Like a fool I didn't blow out the oil and water tubes feeding the turbo or really check them that well. The banjo bolts looked fine so I 'assumed' the tubes were OK. The car has 101k, so again, I assumed at that mileage it was just a failed turbo. I pray these tubes are not clogged...
Thanks!
