I wasn't needing to top off the oil between changes but it definitely like you describe to the point that the belt got saturated, causing it to stretch, which made the tensioner go to the limit and start to rattle. The noise caught my indie's attention when he was doing an oil change so he started to investigate and found the mess. The solution was to power wash the area and put an ultraviolet dye in the oil and check the area out with a black light to see where it was coming from the next time I was in. The suspicion was the head gasket (again) but 'the next time I was in' was this clutch failure and we never did find out. I agree with Paul E, rust is where I draw the line and I had a bit of it going on plus we were short on time so it's time was up. Hope yours fairs better :)
