Many are the guesses and tactical fints and solutions but nothing seems to correct the underlying problem.
That sheet metal gasket just doesn't seem to be able to keep tight at that spot.
We thought it might be due to the weak head bolts (improved in late 01) and they thought it might be a PCV problem (improved in 04) but nothing seeems to take care of that leak for good.
Some cars are really bad and leave oil puddles on the ground but I think those are the ones that also have piston ring problems creating even more pressure inside the oil crank cas that the PCV system cannot handle.
If a car have lots of oil residue around the oil filler cap, it most likely have weak piston rings and also oil consumption.
Cars in colder climate seems to fair better than here in LA and the 9-3 seems to leak less than the 9-5.
