Do not, do not, do not power wash the engine! As someone else said, you risk electrical problems. Click & Clack (the guys on NPR) say not to wash and engine).
I like Simple Green, but be careful spraying it--it bothers my lungs if I accidentally breath some of the mist. Even better if you have an aviation supply place of some sort nearby is Extreme Simple Green, which is made for aircraft. Regular SG is a little corrosive to aluminum and you must be sure to rinse it all off--think about what could happen to electrical contacts. Extreme SG is not corrosive and really works well. I had some stains on the belly of my plane (exhaust and oil) that nothing else would touch, including paint thinner, and about 15 seconds after I sprayed the stuff on in the crud started dripping off. Yesterday I sprayed some on some dried bugs, walked over, picked up the hose and they just washed right off, no scrubbing needed.
