At least you could move to lessen the damage! I've not been so lucky with rear end hits.
1st time: Sitting still in my '70 VW in a parking spot in front of the post office in Saranac Lake, NY. The car is pointing downhill. I have a car in front of me. I look in the rearview to see a car rolling down the hill at me. No place to go. I stand on the brakes and get hit. Just sheet metal damage the tune of $400 (this in 1977).
2nd time: Sitting still in bumper to bumper traffic on Rte 128 in Reading, MA. Left lane. Look back to see a Suby wagon aimed at my tail. Again, no place to go, except the car 10' in front. Stand on the brakes. Wham, I'm hit at 15-20 mph. The Suby is impaled on my trailer hitch, retching coolant, needing a tow. My '78 Scirocco is wounded and needs $2000 of work but drives away. My neck is sore for a couple of days. The Suby was really pranged.
The body shop will make your car nice again.
