Thanks TKC for your reply.
True, I am rather protective of my car. I have had a number of Saabs over the years and I particularly enjoy this one. But more to the point, I enjoy working on cars and it bothers me when a project is not done correctly.
As far as Dexcool (ethylene glycol) vs older propylene glycol "green" coolants . . . there are many advantages to ethylene glycol coolants, and I would prefer ethylene glycol coolants (like Dexcool or Amsoil) to the green coolants. The problem is that when you mix the two, you have a world of potential sludge problems.

Green coolants typically use silicates as a corrosion protectant. Over time they are "used up" which is why you must change your green coolants much more frequently. Silicates are also abrasive and tougher on water pumps and seals. If you are using a green coolant and don't do a complete drain and thorough flush of your system . . . when you add Dexcool, you will get sludge that will clog your system. A thorough flush is imperative-- this was not done at my previous visit when they changed my water pump and added the dexcool into my system that had been using green coolant. (Like I said, this particular dealership seems to be a really good group of people unlike my original dealership, and I believe it was a simple mistake. I subesequently did a thorough flush to make sure the next coolant used was not tainted and that is when I switched over to the Amsoil coolant (could have just as well used Dexcool) . . . all was good).
However, my current concern related to the contaminants I discovered in my coolant after this last service. Floating solid debris cannot be a good thing to have in your cooling system.
Thanks again TKS for your help!
