new 9-5 was too big? Something doesn't pass the smell test here. Choosing a Maxima over the 9-5 may fly but over an S class Benz or 7 series Bimmer is a bit much.
Unless they start making the Regal in Trollhattan I think many would disagree. The new 9-5 in not a 9-7, rebadged. While it certainly has it's share of GM DNA it drives much more European than US.
Good luck with the Maxima, I think it's the first time I have ever heard someone choose it over an S class or 7 series.
