Reliability ponderings

I have a 2000 9-5 Aero, 67K miles, and have been quite happy - oil changes every 5K or less (full synthetic), regular maintenance, not a lot of city/stop and go driving, etc. A few annoyances - rear shocks failed by 30K (No adequate response from SAAB/GM), power steering hose blew (just as I was parking at home, very kind of it to wait - if I'd been on the road at night I might grouse more) - but other than that it's been service items only. I know more will come with age.
Having just read "Total Loss - Engine Damage" I am wondering about the whole issue of reliability and brand. I see (or think I see) a far more older Volvo, Saab, BMW, Mercedes than older Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Acura, Nissan (and just not a lot of Infinity's old or new). I know the quality surveys look at early build quality, and the Japanese marques do well. However, how does that relate to lifetime? Are the owners of the older cars I see taking better care of the vehicle? Do they drive less? Does this post belong on the general board?
Your thoughts?
