if you live somewhere in Canada where studs are allowed (ie anywhere other than southern Ontario) get studded Nokian Hakka 5's. I've driven back to back almost identical Saabs, one wearing 10 year old studded Hakkas + the other brand new unstudded Hakkas. You would not believe how much better the 10 year old studded tires were. New studded Hakkas are better still. The difference between studded + unstudded is similar to the difference between winter + all season tires imho...
When it comes to winter tires, different models are designed for different compromises. The 3 main extremes I would note are:
1) Ice tires - tread designed to be decent in snow, but optimized for ultimate straight line stopping power on ice without studs. Lots of siping + soft rubber compounds. Replace them very frequently as the grip decreases (sometimes very rapidly) with wear + age. Many asian tires fall in this group. Blizzak + XIce lean this way as well (though are somewhat well balanced).
2) Deep snow tires - aggressive treads that are great in deep snow. Less area for siping means they are not quite as good stopping in a straight line on ice as ice tires... but, with studs, they are better on ice. A lot better! Hakkapellitas fall into this group (though still have siping for ice, they are best with studs).
3) Performance winter tires - decent in snow + ice, but optimized for a more well balanced performance driving experience recognizing that the roads are bare a good chunk of the time. RSi, Alpin, Dunlop etc fall in here...
I like to go skiing on snowy days so I like a tire that can handle deep snow. We can't use studs here, so my hakkas are unstudded + work very well. Michelin XIce would be my second choice here. Studded Hakkas would be my choice anywhere else - they are unbelievably good!
