I couldn't disagree with you more. I think you are completely wrong here.
By downshifting you are not wearing out the clutch unless you let it slip alot. Same holds true for an autobox - drop it in a lower gear and let the engine do the braking. I've put 150k+ miles on 3 manual Saabs and over 100k miles on 2 others and I've never replaced a clutch, and I always downshift - usually through several gears. Clutches are worn out by slow release, especially under accelleration in the higher gears. Downshifting doesn't put anywhere near the load on the clutch that acceleration does.
As to your opinion on pumping vs riding the brakes: Riding lets the heat build up - the brakes don't get a chance to 'breathe' and disapate the heat - and the brakes get hotter and hotter.
Downshift and pump - whether with a manual or auto tranny.
