My 1999 9-5 3.0 decided I was driving it too much-
202,000 and the engine died. I was at 65mph when the engine lost power- dropped about 1000 rpm and was not accelerating, but was smooth. When I got it to the side of the road, and tried a restart, it would try to catch, but sounded like the engine was beating itself up. My initial thought was timing belt, but then thought one of the ignition coils had gone bad. The shop I had it towed to did a quick survey, only found an 02 code, and the quick check at the top of the belt said it was ok. they felt something was broken inside the engine from the clunk they heard when turning it over. (done about 60 k ago with head repair. I did have a slight whine at idle for the previous week that I guessed was a pulley somewhere going bad. I understand- from previous experience- that this is a zero tolerance engine.

We went to Jersey Saturday and towed it back home with the 1990 Landrover my son and I rebuilt. Kudos to my local shop for loaning me a tow dolly,(they know who pays there bills...) and Thanks to the shop in jersey for only charging my 1/2 hour labor for their work. (they get $95/ hour there!)

So Yesterday I started a teardown of the engine. Going at it as a timing repair, but expecting to do some deeper work. At 202K, I feel the engine could use the work- love to put new rings on it and check the bearings.

Here are a few questions :

Is there anything simple that you would check for? (crankcase position sensor?)

Can the bulk of this rebuild be done with the engine in place? ( there are two star bolts on the oil pan that may be close to impossible...)

Anything else to look for- or look out for?

Any good source for technical data- bolt torque, etc.
Favorite low price part supplies?

Thanks for your input,
Rob
