The color enamel is often sanded off by sand/grit kicked up by the vehicle ahead of the car. I had experienced rapid color enamel loss on both Saab's and BMW's. That's one of the reasons why I bought my wife a Toyota SUV. She tailgates too much, sanding off the emblems and putting paint chips on the Saab and BMW cars' hoods in the process.
