It may simply need a fluid flush. The proper way to do this is to drain the pan, and refill, repeating 3 times, as you can't get all 12 quarts out at once. You usually get 3 quarts out per drain. A total of 4 flushes gets you to about 75% or so "new" fluid. Worked wonders on my late 1999 LPT...
DO NOT have the transmission "power flushed", or any sort of flushing that does not involve the draining of the fluid via the pan. Power flushes can stir up the crud that sank to the bottom of the pan, putting it back into places is shouldn't be, and possibly costing you an expensive rebuilt transmission someplace down the line.
Both my mechanic and I think that a power flush was what did in the auto trans on my current 2000 SE, causing the P.O. to install a rebuilt trans 4 months before I bought the car.
