"It's not the ECU."
Shops LOVE to swap ECUs. It takes them 5 minutes and they make big $ on the part.
But ECUs hardly EVER fail.
So if they want to swap the ECU make sure you have a money-back guarantee!
My ECU story:
'87 Nissan pickup. Used to bog and hesitate off the line. Would occasionally backfire and stall. Could never diagnose the trouble myself so took it to local (trusted, very good) Nissan dealer. They had a policy of only charging max 1 hour labour for diagnostic. In this case their diagnostic came back, "Bad ECU, $900. We swapped in a spare and the trouble went away". I told them it was not worth it for that truck and I would just put up with the bad driveability. They put the old ECU back in, I paid the $80, and took the truck home.
THE TROUBLE NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN. Looks like just reseating the connector on the old ECU would have fixed it....
