stumbles and dies

My son was driving our new 2002 linear home on the highway early this morning and the car stumbled and died. He pulled over to the side, restarted it and then it died again. He turned on the flashers and called for a tow. After a few minutes the flashers stopped blinking and the dome light started blinking on and off. He said the car would not start again.
I checked the records that came with the car and found that the prior owner replaced the CPS within the last 5,000 miles. I had just replaced the plugs with NGKs (prior owner was running Bosch platinums) and the car was running fine until this morning. I think the charging system is ok--I checked it last week with a voltmeter that showed 14+ volts while running and 11.75 at startup.
Any ideas on what is wrong? I am thinking it could be the direct ignition cassette or maybe an alternator. Unfortunately, he had it towed to our local saab indie so I won't have a chance to do any diagnostics today.
