first thing for him to know, he is probably just out of the original factory warranty, so keep that in mind if it is not a CPO car. I have an 06 9-5 SC with 53k miles on it. Here are some things I would think about if looking at one:
1. check out the rear tires, if they are worn oddly, the rear probably needs shims to align correctly. If he doesnt get this done, he will go through rear tires
2. Throttle bodys seem to be going on these. I had this replaced on my car already. One sign was a rough idle at stops, then a bit of hesitating on the highway from 50+
3. heater bypass valve seems to be failing on these. Not sure what to look for, for me, I just came out to my car one day and found coolant on the floor.
4. you can run regular gas with this car, but you will get pinging, premium gas for me gets rid of pinging. honestly though, the performance diffence between the two for me is not noticable.
5. I've had to replace the left rear wheel speed sensor twice already, seems kind of odd, 12k miles apart.
Lastly, I would really only buy this car again or another Saab if it was CPO. My car is CPO and I really appreciate it. that last speed sensor failed and would've been north of $500 I'm sure if not CPO, the light buld for my shifter indicator (next to the shifter where it says, P, R, D, etc.) just went out but is covered under CPO. Also just had a bushing that holds that the power steering line by the front of the car fail, it was covered under CPO. Probabably not big issues if you are a good self-mechanic and like working on Saabs, but I'm not so I appreciate having a CPO vehicle.
