Yes the overall consensus is that the cat does not boil the oil to crisp by its location.
More people believe it could be the choice of that Semi synthetic oil that was introduced right at that moment. Or maybe was it due that they also raised the oil change intervals to 10K miles right at that time with that oil. Maybe it was poorly designed PCV system. Could it have been due to the introduction of low friction piston rings allowing a lot more blow by gasses into the oil. Nahh, it was probably due to the redesigned oil pump that barely could keep the oil pressure up at perfect conditions. Or maybe it was these ridiculously fined meshed oil pump pickup screens that didn't allow anything except pure clean oil to pass through and as soon as some kernels started to accumulate, it slowly starved the pump and engine of oil and it started to down spiral after that. Or maybe it was because of the loose and low quality cylinder head bolts allowing small amount of coolant into the oil.
Or maybe it was the cat after all. Who knows and no one will.
It is just too many things that changed right before and around the introduction of the B205/235 engine to tell.
