Checking shocks

In previous posts, folks mentioned leaking shocks as a symptom that the shocks are bad. In my limited experience, I would say that although leaks would be one symptom, that is not the only way shocks fail.
Shocks can fail internally. They have a piston working in a cylinder and just as with engine pistons and cylinders the clearances between the two can wear to where the shocks no longer function.
Many years ago I found this out when I pulled suspicious shocks off my car. These shocks showed no signs of leakage, but when removed they would slide in and out with virtually no resistance.
I can think of no reason why newer shocks would be immune to this kind of failure.
So don't depend on leaks to tell you your shocks are bad.
I'm sure someone will tell me if I am wrong.
