If one rear shocks is bad (especially in wagons) the car will "fishtail" over bumps especially at higher speeds. One wheel will come down before the other and you will feel the back end move quickly and slightly to one side.
As someone stated before fronts are a bit harder to detect.
Only way to check for sure is to remove the strut / shock and push down. Many that I have worked on do not leak but do not come back after being pushed in, or come back very slowly and / or are very easy to push in.
