For mice, here is a low maintenance mouse trap. You need a bucket, a pop or beer can, a coat hanger and something for a ramp. And peanut butter for bait.
Punch or drill a small hole in the center of the top and bottom of the can. Put about 4-5" of water in the bucket. Apply peanut butter to the sides of the can, then suspend it over the bucket with the coat hanger. Then provide some sort of ramp up to the rim of the bucket.\
Mouse climbs ramp, jumps or walks wire to get peanut butter which spins out from under him / her and goes for a fatal swim. Would probably work on rats and chipmunks if you had the right bait and a big enough bucket.
