I went to the Volvo Drive Event this fall prior to the release of the new S60. I drove it at least half a dozen laps around a course they had set up. Got on the gas hard throughout the course. I was very impressed with the acceleration and agility of the car. The fit and finish is amazing and the leather is really top quality. The technology in the safety equipment stood out as well.
Volvo provided a 3 series and an A4 for comparison. They were not even close. The Volvo was superior in all ways in my opinion. That being said, it does not come in a manual trans. I asked about it and the engineer said they had them in Europe, but were not being offered in the US at this point.
The inside is smaller than the 95 old and new version. I have a '99 95 and the S60 is a completely different driving experience. Not apples to apples. I drove the 6 cylinder 95 at the Saab Owners Convention last summer. Again, the engine was mated to an autobox. I need to drive the 4 cylinder with a manual transmission before I offer an opinion of the car.
I know what you mean about some sales people. In many cases, if you ask how long they have sold that brand, usually, it is less than a year.
