How to boost fuel efficiency

I've recently moved and now have a 1.5 hr commute each way to work. I love my 9-5 Aero, but I would also love to get more MPG. My Speedo is about 5mph fast, so my trip computer reading of 27mpg is likely closer to 22 or 23. Big ;-(
I imagine a K&N filter might help. It sure did on my previous Saab, a 9-3 HOT. I suspect a performance exhaust would too, but might also take quite some time to pay for itself in fuel savings.
Any other suggestions? ECU reprogramming? I run the platinum plugs, although haven't changed them in about 40k miles. I also run Mobil 1 10w30 and keep my tires a tad bit on the stiff side.
I was, for a brief while, looking at some new Benz, Volvo and BMWs. To be honest, they really aren't much more car yet would cost a TON more since mine is already paid for. Paying 1000% more for 5% more car doesn't make sense to me.
So ... input appreciated.
Thanks,
N
