I don't think I would want to drive a 2002 Kia. Besides the regular maintenance, there are the safety issues and they rust pretty badly. A 2002 3 series BMW will also have its own share of expensive maintenance problems, so I don't believe that will gain you any ground.
Now, if you are comparing your 9 year old car to a new Kia or BMW, then that is a different matter. No one can argue that a brand new car will present fewer maintenance issues than one with will over 100k. But that's really talking apples and oranges.
