The victim is a 2000 Aero. The car was acquired about 2 years ago. At that time a preliminary inspection under the valve cover showed that sludge was an issue.
The first order of business was to upgrade the PVC, and put it on a strict maintenance schedule of M1 0w40 oil changes every 3k. I drove it for ~20k miles before getting around to dropping the pan. In that time its been very reliable and there is no sign of engine trouble. no valve or timing noises. no smoke. good power. It now has 132k miles.
Here is what I found when I dropped the pan:
There is plenty of sludge (as expected), but we have all seen worse. There is partial screen blockage but not too bad ... I'd say less than 50%. I've cleaned out the pan and punching a few larger holes in the screen. I think it can survive the sludge.
But what are the grey plastic strands? It seems that some plastic component is shredding, but what internal component is plastic? And more importantly what is the prognosis of the patient?
