Well, it is two ways to deal with a badly sludged engine.
You can take the engine apart and hot wash everything and put it back together or you can try to get as much as possible out by removing the oil pan, oil pump and valve cover and scrub the heck out of everything using lots and lots of carb cleaner and brushes.
You will never get everything out though and the things left in there will find their way to the bottom slowly.
If you open up the mesh or change it out with a more course one that some do, at least those kernels will get through, get chewed up by the pump and spit out into the oil filter and removed every oil change.
It's a low cost rescue of a doomed engine trying to keep it alive as long as possible.
We NEVER saw this on the old Saab engines from the 80s and 90s. I don't think you could abuse them enough by lack of oil changes that they got sludged up.
The old 900 had like 1/8" holes in the oil pick just barely keeping the nuts and bolts out that you threw in at every oil change and they did just fine. No worn out oil pumps or anything. Stuff that fell down got sucked up and spit out into the oil filter, end of story.
I don't know what's up with these finnicky newer engines but all the hoopla and PCV quick fixes are only a band aid for the underlying real problem whatever that is.
The V6 engines doesn't have any sludge problems and every time now when I lift the valve covers to replace gaskets, it looks like the camshaft area just came out of the hot wash with maybe a light bronze coating of color to it.
This picture is not clear enough to see but the screen mesh hole size is much bigger but the whole pickup hole is much, much smaller than the 4 cyl engine and the V6 is doing just fine.
