I just replaced a 4 Speed Autobox last week on my 2001 LPT wagon. Since my vehicle has 175,000 miles on it, I did not feel like spending ~$3,000 for the "official SAAB" rebuilt tranny.(plus the labor)
I opted for a $400 used tranny box, from a local recycler, based on my dealership partsman, and mechanic's recommendations.
There are numerous automatic transmissions from older SAABs available, at very reasonable prices.
I'd strongly suggest you talk to your mechanic to determine the precise replacement(ie, read the foil tag information riveted onto the case of 5 speed box presently installed in your car)....as there are some subtle differences that may/may not work.
I have no regrets to my decision to go with used over rebuilt. I'd like to strongly recommend you replace the rear main oil seal when you replace your tranny.
BTW, the planetary gear was the fatal problem in my tranny's failure....just as SWEDECAR had predicted.
