The light means something wrong with the alternator or voltage regulator. With the engine running the voltage should be close to 14 volts. In my experience with earlier model Saabs the alternator brushes which are part of the voltage regulator tend to go first. Its easier to replace the voltage regulator than the brushes alone and I think this can be done in situ (not sure about 9-5s). On the other hand if the mileage is high it may pay to replace the alternator which would include the regulator.
