due to a bad switch. The switch assemblies consist of a small circuit board attached to the switch mechanism itself. On my '01 Aero, the front seat heater switches both failed in the past year. Bought replacements on eBay for less than $10 apiece. I took a bad one apart: I suspect a .15 cent electrolytic capacitor, but have not gotten around to testing my theory. Consumer grade electrolytics subjected to lots of heat (it gets pretty warm behind the center dash area...) don't last forever, in my experience.
bobc is right: just swap the switches & see if the problem changes sides.
