1), Pull the main air hose into the throttle body and look for any foreign stuff. If so probably turbo, not 100% definitive. Can also pull the hose apart under the drivers front corner of car and look there.
2) Definitive, take the air intake to the turbo off and touch the turbo blade shaft. Check for end play and excessive left and right play. If ANY end play, turbo gone.
3) If turbo is good, then probably head gasket, hope for turbo.
I just replaced a V6 Turbo and 145k with very good up keep.
Only note from other is I had to cut the lower left stud (looking at car from front). to get the manifold off. Much easier than other solutions and there was enough thread to use again.
Can always replace with new stud after manifold is back on.
