The four-speed automatics require a Dexron-III fluid which is a trademark no longer licensed by GM. so we either buy a fluid claiming to meet obsolete Dexron-III specs, or use the newer Dexron-VI fluid which may be a semi-synthetic. My feeling is that the synthetic ban is nonsensense - provided the fluid meets the required lubricity specs for the transmission.
The four-speeds have a 24mm hex plug.
The three change method is done because you can only drain half the fluid out of the transmission. The other half remains captive in the torque converter. Each drain and re-fill requires 3 quarts, maybe a little more, so doing the three drain method will require 10 quarts of fluid. After one drainn you will have replaced 50% of the fluid, after two drains you will have 75% new fluid, after three drains you wil have 87% new fluid. It rapidly becomes diminishing returns after that point.
