just back from a trip to vermont where we had ice and snow .
i had just installed the conti's dws tires on the car and left for vt with 5oo miles on them.
on the way up ,some rain but mostly dry and the tires were great.gave good feedback.
while in vt. and on the trip back yesterday , i encountered snow, slush, ice and mud (in back roads to near the sugarbush airport ),
i got the conti tire becasue they were the cheapest i could find for the aero.( i need the cheapest tires because of the serious camber problems i have in the rear due to no camber adjustment and continous tire cupping ) ( dealers ,have not been able to correct the problem )therefore i decided to just keep replacing the rear tires on this car as they get worse at around 11,000 miles ,and i just keep the fronts in place .i am now only doing 2 to 3,000 miles per year on this car and mostly only when i am in conn. and vt.
anyhow these tires have proven to be great in the dry ,not as quick steering as the oe michelin tires but very acceptable . the car does have 135,000 miles ,approx. ( i have tried kumho tires and other and not happy noisy and wear rate.)
in the mud i was somewhat worried as they sort of wandered a litlle ,lots of mud ,covering the lower portion of the tire. but they eventually got me out of it . i think that going up hill i would have been stuck.
on ice i felt confident with them and on snow/slush the same .
i did drive at 65 mph and did ot go over this due to the 31 degree temp. in the i89 from the waitsfiedl/warren exit thru the mass. border going thru the mountains .aprox. 145 miles or so.
the mpg did drop to 26.5 from the usual 32 in the winter and 29 in the summer a/c on .
once in Mass. it dried up and was great all the way back to conn.
the mpg improved to an overall 27.7 mpg.
the car does have a 5 % error as compared to the gps.
my 1982 bmw r100rs has a 0 mph error compared to the gps. when it say 83 mph the gps reads the same and true in all other speeds . i wonder why a 30 year old bike has a more accurate speedo.
anyhow , still like the saab ,even thou i have leased the maxima which i find superior in every respect ( sorry about this guys but a fact from a guy who owns more than one car and has owned every make there is ( except for the new chines cars and the yugo )i do qualify this statement to say that it applies to the usa driving conditons and not european driving .
