What I do is to put as much spin on the converter as I can using my fingers and then stopping it suddenly and then spin it the other way around and by that it usually finds the different sets of splines and you can kind of hear it clicking in place and sinking deeper and deeper into the bell housing until it is below enough of the mounting flange.
It's not so much of a precise science but more of a feeling and experience what it should look like when it is seated enough. Each year model and brand have their own differences.
I also try to line of the converter bolt holes with flexplate and cut out where the bolts and socket fit in before mounting the transmission so I don't have to stand there poking through the flex plate and trying to rotate the converter.
