I did that in my '99 before aftermarket shocks were available. It improved cornering and eliminated front end dive with braking. However, dips would compress the springs and the stock shocks were not stiff enough to control the rebound sufficiently (felt like you were launched).
I later upgraded the shocks when a product became available. I've heard that the stock shock on newer models is stiffer, perhaps not as big an issue now.
