You must be seeing things... Perhaps it has to do with the rim width, but based on tire specs (I went to Bridgestone's site and looked up specs on their S0-3):
205/55/16 overall width = 8.4", tread w = 7.6", dia = 24.9"
225/45/17 overall width = 9", tread w = 8.4", dia = 25"
