The 240 series Volvo, still a great car, was engineered back in the 60's & imho it did not age as well as the classic 900's which were spun off of the 99 series albeit not as old. The 740 turbo is a nice package but it is hard to find a low mileage clean wagon. An alternative would be to go with a 740 with an American v-8 with a six speed manual. These conversions get remarkably good gas mileage & they have the sleeper quotient we all love. If you scale down the size of dogs, then the 9-5 Aero Sportwagon is the perfect car for you. Perhaps a RWD only Merc E-Class with the diesel engine is the answer? Have fun & good luck!
