In a 240 it goes like this:
One large dog crate with the seats folded
One medium dog in the flat area where the rear passenger seat is folded
One medium dog in the passenger footwell because she won't ride anywhere else and likes to sleep the entire trip
DW (Dear Wife) in the passenger seat
Luggage between the crate and side walls and in the rear seat footwells under the folded seats
It was tight but doable. If my wife were over 5' or I was over 5'10", it would not work (seat travel limited by folded seats).
760 was the same except the extra large crate fits. Also, driver's and passenger's seats can travel back MUCH further.
So I will obviously have prospective sellers laughing at me as I pull out the giant crate from our tiny hatch to test fit it in the 9-5.
I already know it fits the E-class and the V70 (more cargo space than the 940). The V70's tend to handle well for a FWD car (or so I am told) but Saab handling, at least in the classic cars, is legendary. Perfect blend of compliance and handling. A well set-up 240 does this but I have never driven a 7/9-series Volvo or and E-series Mercedes and fits that bill.
