Leasing certainly existed in 1992, my folks leased a '92 Jeep Cherokee for a couple years that year. But with the uncertainty, is it possible to lease a Saab at the moment? I assume the deep discounts are only available on a purchase, and I see no mention of leasing on the website currently. And leasing the car does not protect you from warranty issues. Finally, while the greasy bits may be shared with sundry GM cars, the electronics are most certainly not, and THOSE are where you are likely to have issues.
A 405 was chock full of bought in components from Bosch, Hella, Valeo, etc. It probably shared nearly as much with a Jetta as a 9-5 does with a Buick. And as I mentioned, Peugeot was still in business and providing parts and warranty coverage. I did not pass on the car due to those concerns, I passed on it because I was fresh out of college and did not need a $10K debt load. The parts situation for Peugeots in the US did not become a problem until the mid-2000s. I had several 504s and 505s until 2004.
For a long time, Peugeot shared the same parts warehouse as Saab in PA.
