I've been using Akebono Euro brake pads in my Saabs for years, beginning with a C900 convertible. I've used them in two 9-5's including my current car, a 2003 9-5 Aero Wagon. Two summers ago I installed them all the way around, as well as new rotors.

Well...a few days ago the brake pedal felt funny. Then, in moderate traffic going about 35 MPH I stepped on the pedal to stop for a traffic light. Thankfully I wasn't too close to the car in front of me because the pedal went to the floor accompanied by a "clunk" metal on metal sound. I pumped a couple of times and pedal pressure came back but I had a horrible metal on metal sound. Being only a couple of miles from my son's school and needing to pick him up, I kept driving.

Upon arriving I inspected the car and found my left rear outside brake pad was GONE!! The metal on metal sound was the caliper on the rotor. To make a long story short, I bought a set of cheapie brake pads at an auto parts store to hold me over and replaced the left rear set that evening. I've done pads and rotors twice on 9-5's and consider myself fairly familiar with the brake system...I've also changed brakes on many past Saabs.

I removed the caliper and couldn't find anything wrong with it. It moved freely on the guide pins. The piston was all the way out and it took some muscle to push it back in. But now, 3 days after the incident with my cheapo pads still installed, everything seems to work well.

I ordered another set of Akebono Euros and new rotors (got a great deal which is why I'm replacing the rotors, too).

My question for everyone is twofold:

1) Ever had a brake pad depart the car like this?
2) Ever had problems with Akebono Euro pads breaking?

Thanks.
