Was the steel backing plate gone too? Since the friction material of brake pads are now bonded to the steel backing plates rather than being riveted I suppose it is possible for the friction material to shear off.
I just installed Akebono Euros on all four corners of my car Friday, had no problem with excess pad thickness as has been posted here recently, and was feeling pretty good about things until I read your post.
